A last look: We’re paying homage to what’s left of the cherry tree that fell and became our game table and many other projects and still more to come. It was a big tree… Whoop, there it is! All assembled and installed in its permanent place. It’s a thing of beauty and, more importantly, a lot of fun. Thank you Gramie for the woodlands cover! And several other features not shown here. here. […] We’re installing control rod bushings today. C’mon boys, pick up the pace. It’s only 102 hand-driven screws! Barring any revolting setbacks, we’re close to wrapping this project. Our table is resting in the supine position today. We’re attaching the legs to check form, fit, and function. They’ll have to come off for finishing and transporting, but in the meantime, it’s socket wrench and ratchet box end wrench work! Always favorites… Oh, and we had to hang a new basketball net. Squirrels ate […] We’re moving on to details. The boys are mocking up the scoring beads. We found some wooden toy car parts in the back of a drawer. Wood wheels will be the beads. We’ve said it many times, here in the woodlands, we use what we’ve got… One wag said, “It looks like our abacus.” So, […] The boys enjoyed making the countersink plugs and now they’re tapping some in. Good times. For those keeping score, I’ll flush trim the end-grain overhang of the side boards using a two-flute down-cut spiral router bit. A task not yet for the boys… We’re conducting a test to see if we need a mesh net […] We’re pleased with way the leg pieces dried next to the wood stove in the living room… I told the boys we’ll need to install leveling feet on them. “Those need to go in the center. How do you suppose we could find the center of a rectangle?” I was glad to hear, “Connect the […] Well, we’re starting to see some progress. I’m starting to see some players running around on the field. ‘If you build it…’ Ya know, it would be a lot easier to make this thing from birch plywood or strand-board, compared to making it from a dead cherry tree. But where’s the adventure in that? It’d […] We finished four of the handles and attached them to the tubes. I keep the boys separate from the chemical side of woodworking, but I thought I’d mention that the polyurethane type Gorilla glue works well for this sort of thing. The wood handles and steel shafts are eternally united. We’re working on the underbelly […] We’re jumping ahead to the control rod handles while we wait for polyurethane to dry on other parts. You can buy plastic handles, but that wouldn’t be our way. We’re making our own wooden ones. The boys are learning about a wood lathe today, using it first as a horizontal drill press. I still do […] |
