Maple tree cluster…we’re down to the mother trunk. We are working on it. And yes, we do have the rafters for the post and beam project! They are in the oven. We got distracted by the end-grain of the silver maple logs. It’s art to us and we decided to make a batch of wood cookies. It’s a slow process the way we do it. The cookies get submerged in a solution of polyethylene glycol for months to displace water. Then they get air-dried crack free. […] Thanks to Grammie, silver maple logs are arriving regularly at the mill. We’re trying to get the most we can out of these. We need rafters, lots of rafters… […] We’re still whittling away with joinery work. The team enjoys this and they’re getting good at it. We are on-hold as far as skidding in more downed trees to continue making beams and such. For that, we need our new ATV to arrive. Our 20-year-old one caught fire while I was riding it. Fortunately, the […] We’re getting started on some joinery work. We don’t have the specialized tools that are ideal for this, but as we always say – we use what we’ve got, and we do fine. Plus, the labor here is so cheap… The sawmill itself worked well for notching in the ridge beam stanchions. And I’m liking […] We’re making parts one at a time, posts, plates, ridge beam, girts, tie-beams, and more. So far only three flavors: locust, cherry, and a bit of elm. But there will be others, I’m sure, depending on which way the wind blows in the woodlands. I know it’s cruel and unusual to make these guys do […] Post and Beam Project Update – Short handed today as Thing One is at the big scout camp. But Thing Two is hard at it. We completed the posts needed for the shed and now we’re sealing the end grain. After lugging these posts around, I decided to weigh one using the grandkid scale in […] We’re still at it with the posts. Soon we’ll be moving on to something more interesting than gluing up 6 X 6 posts, ya know, like, say, 4 X 6 beams… And still had time to catch up and practice kayaking. […] A new project! – The foosball table was a perfect prerequisite for building a post and beam style shed… Today we’re learning about a glue dispenser roller and clamping to laminate black locust planks into 6×6 support posts. This project will take a while, but we’re getting started. […] |
