The crew worked hard to move the elm logs into the sawmill. The wood doesn’t look much like sailboat parts now, but wait till you see what we make of it. Oh, and we had lots of time to play on the tundra… […] http://www.woodlandssawmill.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Henry-can-run.m4v Today’s the day we toppled the dead elm tree that we’ll use for the mast, boom, spar, etc. We were worried that it would crash through the ice, but we celebrated that it didn’t. Note how fast Henry can move when the saw fires up and he knows he’s not in position… http://www.woodlandssawmill.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/DSCN5008.m4v […] Who ya gonna call when you wanna transfer a full size drawing onto marine plywood to make a dagger board blade? It’s a beautiful cool morning in the woodlands and the boys are working on their rowing merit badges… The SeaKing is launched and what a beautiful launch it was. So proud of these boys and the work they did to build their boat. It’s a thing of beauty. We’re wrapping up the rowboat phase. Installing oarlocks, treating the leather oar sleeves with tallow, and naming up the boat. Lloyd and I negotiated. He argued for Sea King. I argued for Seeking. We settled on SeaKing. There are many lessons in boat building… Only the non-slid floor remains to be installed. Then we’re off […] Good grief…four coats of epoxy later, we’re finally at the steel wool stage – ready to start finishing so to speak. The experts say painting is a good option because it’s easier to repair and it hides flaws. We’ve looked very closely; we’ve nothing to hide. We will not paint. We’ll only varnish. That’s next, […] While we’re stuck in an infinite loop of epoxy coating and sanding out runs…we’re giving some thought to the sailing components we’ll make in the winter. We chose the dead elm tree across the pond for the mast, yard, boom, dagger board, tiller, and rudder. That’ll work. […] The boys have worked hard all summer building this boat and we’ve reached a big milestone. The sanding is done! We’re celebrating with Moose Track and Peppermint Stick ice cream cones! Also, with kindergarten and second grade starting next week, it’s time to say how fun it’s been to tackle another project with these guys.. […] No progress today; we’re tired of sanding! Time out for the ancient game of carom in the log cabin… |
