Walnut Art

The walnut sapling that was crushed during storm a while back has yielded a bit of sawmill art. It’s a simple thing showing a serpentine grain flow through a stack. I was going to call it the Times Table. The second piece from the top is 2 times the first in length, the third is […]

Herbs!

Doing a little life lesson today with the crew. We’re tasting our Scarborough Fair herb garden on simple pasta. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. And Basil and Lime Basil too. We’re learning to recognize taste differences. One of the crew is thinking of becoming a chef. Hint: it ain’t me (babe).

Happy Hour!

Happy hour in the sawmill cupola, a venue not often used. Well, except by bats…

The Elm Log – Part 2

I like my original gold wedding band, but it’s 48 years old! Jeesh. Time for a new elm one fresh from the lathe.

Barge Bridge – Update 14

The Minnow is launched! We’re experimenting today, learning the ropes. It’s just like riding a sea turtle. I’m guessing. Very fun but a lot more practice is needed before any of us try it standing up. We’re pleased with the way the setup matches Henry’s initial sketch. Also, thank you Grammie for making the woodlands […]

Black Locust

We got back together briefly to saw a black locust log in the mill. We’ve always worn safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves. But it took a deadly pandemic to get us wearing masks. What an improvement for sawdust. We should have been doing this all along. We will from now on…

The 100 Year Rain!

Well, the hundred-year rain came per the forecast. It was too much to handle for the woodlands pond. The driveway was damaged, but minimally so compared to the upstate situation. We teamed up to repair it and dug in a lot of new overflow capacity for the future. Ya know, to better handle the next […]

Kayaks!

It’s a good day for trying out our new fishing kayaks in the woodlands pond. We got these at Christmas, and they work great. Based on the weather forecast, they may be our main means of transportation for the next few days…

The Elm Log Project

So what was I to make from the elm log? If you guessed a Mother’s Day bracelet for the lovely woodland’s gardener, you are correct. Congratulations!

Walnut

There wasn’t much yield from the victimized walnut sapling. I sealed the end grain of what I did get and tossed the pieces into the kiln. There’s enough here for some arts and crafts size projects. And it’s always a joy to work with walnut.
